Songs, music videos, biographies of musicians, and music forums occupy a lot of virtual space. Internet users have to adapt musical terms to virtual communication, turning online musical commentary into a new speech genre. The author studied music-related texts, users’ comments, and video reviews in the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet to identify the processes of terminological adaptation and the genre specifics of music commentaries. Music-related terms undergo a deep transformation on the Internet. As a result of semantic expansion combined with grammatical and stylistic decline, consistency and rigor give way to creativity and expressiveness. This adapted terminology system becomes the linguistic foundation for a new, dynamically developing speech genre of music commentary. It is a subjective and emotional statement rather than an objective analysis, but it fulfills certain social and expressive functions.
