EVOLUTION OF THE INTERVIEW AS A ONLINE DIALOGICAL MEDIA FORMAT
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
The interview is a online dialogic media format that evolves by adjusting to the modern media environment. Today, online interviews are a leading format for video blogging in the Russian-speaking segment due to their flexibility and multimedia capabilities. Focusing on the Ostorozhno: Sobchak YouTube channel, the author analyzes the key stages of the interview between 2018 and 2024 as a genre and a format. The genre exhibits stable content and compositional features, while the format represents a dynamic presentation of content that adapts to communication tasks and platform features. The study covered 85 interviews on a wide variety of topics, tracing the genre of online interview from its emergence (2018–2019) to its peak (2020–2021) and adaptation to the "new reality" (2022–2024). The format depends on the following elements: a robust video sequence with vivid quotes, voice-overs, multiple locations, gamified advertising integrations, and mandatory structural features (greeting, the interviewee’s story, etc.). Initially, the online interview was restrained and short, influenced by television standards. During its heyday, it became oversaturated with multimedia elements, frequent location shifts, and high-tech advertising. Today, it is shifting toward a more restrained and focused use of formative techniques, characterized by strict editorial control and a distinct authorial style. Editorial work and modern interview technologies transform the online interview into a complex media product, making it possible to predict future trends in dialogue formats within the digital environment.
