ABSTRACT

High-level concepts of sustainable development are often criticized because companies cannot translate into measurable, practically implementable actions. This criticism is linked to the internal contradictions and utopian nature of crisis-free development, which demands effective mechanisms for pragmatic implementation. The article explores the correlations and synergies between the principles of lean manufacturing and sustainable development. The elimination of all types of waste, which is the core principle of lean manufacturing, directly correlates with the economic, social, and environmental pillars of sustainability. Reducing production losses from overproduction, defects, and excessive inventory increases economic efficiency, reduces resource consumption, emissions, and waste, while improving workplace safety and ergonomics. Lean production tools, such as Value Stream Mapping (VSM), enable the identification of hot spots of inefficient resource consumption, thereby making environmental goals measurable. The integration of lean production and sustainable development is an imperative for long-term competitiveness. Lean production acts as a reliable mechanism that operationalizes abstract sustainability goals, enabling companies to transition to resource-efficient and socially responsible business models without compromising their economic objectives.
